Community Security Briefing
CAP would like to alert all runners to a group of approximately four individuals that are targeting road runners in the Westcliff, Saxonwold, Parkwood and Houghton areas, conducting armed robberies in the public space. The suspects, who target males, rob their victims of their running watches, shoes and running attire. Prior to perpetrating the crime, the suspects have been known to drop off a suspect near the jogger first and then the suspect motor vehicle will block off the victim, under the guise of looking for directions. When the victim approaches the suspect motor vehicle, he is robbed of his valuables. The crew operates weekdays between 5:00 – 6:00am One of the suspects has been described to be 20 – 25 years of age, slim, approximately 5.7 foot in height, speaks broken English and is aggressive. This suspect has been confirmed to be armed. A second suspect, who is plump and light in complexion, has also been identified. We advise all runners to take cognisance of the above and practice the defensive behaviour recommendations listed below:
When running in the public space, do not be deceived by individuals who may appear to be seeking assistance.
Avoid running on your own, whenever possible run in groups.
When running plan your route around main arterial roads with good visibility.
Be vigilant in the public space, do not allow yourself to be distracted by your cell phone or headphones.
Be highly cautious if you are approached in the street by 2 or more unknown males on foot or in a vehicle.
